Sample Testing
Before any removal work begins, you need to know exactly what you are dealing with. Asbestos sample testing is the laboratory-confirmed answer to a simple question: does this material contain asbestos, and if so, what type? Hazardous Removal Company provides licensed sample collection across Sydney, Wollongong, the Central Coast and regional NSW, with samples analysed at NATA-accredited laboratories and written results delivered within 24 to 72 hours.
Testing is the most important part of any asbestos project. Skip it, and you either pay to treat ordinary cement sheeting as asbestos when it is not, or you handle dangerous material under the assumption it is safe. Neither outcome is acceptable.

Why Sample Testing Matters
In NSW, legislation states that any fibro cement sheeting must be treated as asbestos unless you can prove otherwise. Without a written test result, every contractor, council and insurer will default to the most cautious assumption, and you will pay full asbestos removal rates regardless of what the material actually is.
There are three main reasons sample testing should be the first step in any project:
- Certainty. You cannot identify asbestos by eye. Even experienced builders and tradespeople are wrong regularly. The only way to know for sure is laboratory analysis.
- Cost control. Many of our clients save thousands of dollars after testing confirms their material does not contain asbestos. Disposal, transport and removal costs for confirmed asbestos are significantly higher than for ordinary building waste.
- Compliance. SafeWork NSW, EPA and council documentation requirements all begin with a written laboratory test result. Without it, you cannot legally proceed with controlled removal, and you have no record to support any future renovation or property sale.
If you are not yet sure what is in your property, an on-site asbestos inspection is the right starting point. Our licensed inspectors identify every suspect material on the property and collect samples for testing as part of the same visit.
How Samples Are Collected
Sample collection has to be done correctly, because the act of collecting a sample can release fibres if it is mishandled. Our licensed technicians follow a controlled process every time:
- Pre-collection assessment. The technician identifies every suspect material on site and decides which samples are needed. For a typical home, this is usually three to six samples across walls, eaves, garage sheeting, bathroom wet walls and any other suspect surfaces.
- Containment and PPE. The technician wears appropriate respiratory protection, gloves and disposable coveralls during sampling. The work area is isolated where required.
- Wet sampling method. The sample area is wetted with a fine mist to suppress fibre release. A small representative piece is removed with hand tools, placed directly into a sealed bag, and labelled with the sample location, date and reference number.
- Site decontamination. The sample point is sealed to prevent further fibre release, and the surrounding area is left clean.
A site inspection and sampling visit typically takes one to two hours for a residential property. Larger commercial or industrial sites take longer because more sampling points are required to cover the full building.
Testing for asbestos before starting any removal project is crucial. Itās essential to confirm if the material in question contains asbestos to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
There are several reasons it is important to have asbestos sampled prior to removal. Firstly, it allows you to confirm the presence and type of asbestos. Secondly, it can potentially save you money. Many customers who have opted for asbestos testing have saved thousands of dollars because they did not have to treat non-hazardous materials as asbestos. The disposal and removal costs are significantly higher when dealing with confirmed asbestos materials.
In NSW, legislation states that any fibro cement sheeting must be treated as asbestos unless you are certain it does not contain asbestos. While there are some indicators that may suggest whether a material contains asbestos, the only way to be sure is to have it tested.
Ensuring a safe environment begins with the proper identification of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM). At Hazardous Removal Company, we offer a meticulous asbestos identification process. Hereās a summary of our approach:
On-Site Sampling by Licensed Technicians
Our licensed technicians visit the site to collect samples, laying the groundwork for accurate identification.
Laboratory Analysis with Cutting-Edge Technology
Samples are sent to third-party trusted laboratories, adhering to Australian Standards. Standard turnaround for results is 3-5 business days, with optional same-day analysis available. The analysis includes breaking apart samples, locating fibres under a stereomicroscope, and using polarized light microscopy (PLM) with dispersion staining (DS) to identify fibre composition.
NATA Accredited Report and Interpretation
The National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratory provides a detailed report outlining the fibre types and material description. The report is designed to be straightforward, with our team available for any queries.
If no asbestos is found, clients can proceed with standard removal protocols. If asbestos is present, we offer a comprehensive quote for safe removal.
Hazardous Removal Company prioritizes transparency, efficiency, and accuracy in asbestos identification. If the result is negative, you can proceed with standard construction or demolition without asbestos-specific controls. If the result is positive, the type of asbestos and the material classification determine what licence is needed for removal. Most bonded results require a Class B licensed contractor. Friable results require a Class A licence. See our friable asbestos removal page for the difference, or read about our broader asbestos testing service for an overview of the whole testing process.
