Asbestos in Hornsby Shire homes: it is usually under something else
Most of the Shire was built between the 1940s and the early 1980s, which is exactly the window when asbestos cement went into almost every Australian house in some form. The fibro cottages around Hornsby, Waitara and Asquith are the obvious ones. Less obvious are the brick-veneer and weatherboard homes along the ridge in Wahroonga, Thornleigh, Normanhurst and Beecroft, where the walls are fine but the eaves, the garage, the sunroom and the laundry are all fibro. Out on the rural blocks in Dural, Galston, Arcadia and Glenorie there are sheds, dairies and lean-tos that nobody has looked at in fifty years.
The thing we find more in this area than almost anywhere else is fibro that has been covered over. Plastic cladding, aluminium cladding or weatherboard fixed straight on top of the original asbestos sheeting, sometimes decades ago. From the street the house looks fine. The asbestos is still there underneath, and it comes as a surprise when a builder starts pulling the cladding off for a renovation or a knockdown-rebuild.

How a Hornsby Shire job runs
