Asbestos in Penrith homes
The NSW Government’s advice is that a home built or renovated before 1990 is likely to contain asbestos somewhere. Around Penrith that covers a lot of houses: the fibro and brick cottages of the 1950s to 1980s in Penrith itself, Kingswood, Cambridge Park, Werrington, St Marys, Oxley Park, Colyton and Emu Plains, plus the sheds, garages and extensions added to them over the years.
Newer estates such as Jordan Springs and Caddens were built well after asbestos cement went out of use, so the homes there are unlikely to contain it. The rural land around Mulgoa, Wallacia, Castlereagh and Londonderry is different again: old farm cottages, machinery sheds and outbuildings with fibro walls and corrugated roofs.
Factories and workshops in the industrial estates around St Marys and Penrith fall under workplace rules, including an asbestos register for buildings constructed before 31 December 2003. We also handle commercial asbestos removal.

What we do around Penrith
Fibro walls, eaves and fences
External fibro cladding, eave linings and dividing fences on older cottages and extensions. The sheets are kept damp and unscrewed rather than snapped, then double-wrapped on site. Any job over 10 m² of bonded asbestos must be done by a licensed removalist.
Garages, sheds and pergolas
Fibro garages, backyard sheds, carports and pergolas, plus machinery sheds on acreage around Mulgoa and Londonderry. When the structure is coming down too, the asbestos is stripped first and the demolition follows. Garage asbestos removal.
Testing before you renovate
Older bathrooms, laundries and kitchens often have fibro behind the tiles and vinyl on the floor. A sample analysed by a NATA-accredited laboratory tells you what you are dealing with before the first tile comes off. Asbestos testing.
Licensed disposal
Every load goes to a landfill licensed to accept asbestos waste. It cannot go in kerbside bins, a council bulky waste pick-up or an ordinary skip, and you keep the tip receipt for your records.
Corrugated asbestos roofs
Weathered corrugated roofs on garages, sheds and outbuildings. Old asbestos roof sheets are brittle and must never be walked on, so the crew works from safe access and lowers the sheets down whole where it can. Asbestos roof removal.
Independent clearance
When the work area is clean, an independent third party inspects it and issues the clearance certificate. Our Emu Plains and Werrington jobs both finished with a clearance certificate.

How a Penrith job runs
Inspect and quote. We come out, look at the material and its condition, and arrange lab testing if no one has confirmed it is asbestos. The quote is in writing and free.
Lodge the notice. For licensed work we notify SafeWork NSW at least five days before the start date, so allow for that lead time.
Secure the area. The work zone is taped off and signed, and the crew sets up its protective gear and a decontamination area.
Remove it whole. Material is kept wet and unfixed sheet by sheet, then wrapped in heavy-duty plastic and sealed before it leaves the site.
Tip it legally. The sealed waste goes to a licensed asbestos landfill, and the receipt comes to you.
Get it cleared. An independent third party checks the area and signs the clearance certificate.
Jobs around Penrith
Emu Plains: fibro shed removed and demolished
An old backyard shed had flat asbestos sheeting on its external cladding. We removed the asbestos and demolished the shed in one day, working through some rain, and the job finished with a third-party clearance certificate. Project write-up.
Werrington: garage and pergola
Asbestos sheeting on the external walls of a garage came off first, then the garage and its attached pergola were removed. The waste went to a licensed facility and the owner received a clearance certificate. Project write-up.
Londonderry: fibro garage with a corrugated roof
48 m² of flat fibro cladding and 28 m² of corrugated asbestos roof sheeting were removed from a garage on a rural block, and the garage was demolished, all in one day. Project write-up.

Penrith asbestos questions
What Penrith homeowners ask us most. For anything else, call 0452 224 398.
It comes down to what we find on site: the square metres, whether it is flat sheeting or a corrugated roof, how easy it is to reach, and whether a demolition follows. The inspection and written quote are free, so call 0452 224 398 or use the form below.
The house itself is very unlikely to. Asbestos cement was phased out of Australian building products during the 1980s and banned completely at the end of 2003, and Jordan Springs was built long after that. Older sheds, fences or materials brought onto the block are the exception, so test anything you are not sure about.
Yes. We remove asbestos from sheds, garages and outbuildings on acreage, like the fibro garage on our Londonderry job. Weathered roof sheets on old sheds are brittle and should never be walked on.
Only to a landfill that is licensed to accept asbestos, and only once it is wrapped in heavy plastic and sealed. Ring the facility first, as not every tip takes it. It must never go in your kerbside bins or a council clean-up.
No. In NSW a homeowner may remove 10 m² or less of bonded asbestos without a licence, but it still has to be handled, wrapped and disposed of correctly. Many homeowners would rather not, and we are happy to quote small jobs like a single wall or a garden shed.
No. The NSW Government’s planned trial covers free collection and disposal of household asbestos, not removal, and the details have not been released yet. Licensed removal is still paid work.
Yes. We work across the whole City of Penrith, from Emu Plains and Leonay by the river to Kingswood, St Marys, St Clair and Erskine Park, and north through Cranebrook to Llandilo and Londonderry.
